Trauma-Informed Therapies are based on six principles:
1. Safety
2. Trustworthiness and Transparency
3. Peer Support
4. Collaboration and Mutuality
5. Empowerment, Voice and Choice
6. Cultural, Historical and Gender Issues
What does "trauma-informed" mean?

It is estimated that 50-75% of people will experience trauma in their lifetime.

Trauma is described by trauma expert, Bessel Van der Kolk as any gut-wrenching or heartbreaking emotion which overwhelms our experience.  There is no vaccine to trauma which means none of us is immune AND we can recover from trauma through means which are accessible to us all.

Yoga and mindfulness require only a breath and a body which means they can be practiced by all ages, all backgrounds and all walks of life.  Yoga and mindfulness have been practiced for as long as history has been recorded (most historians agree yoga is about 5,000 years old). This means they have been tried and tested by over 35 generations. Recent research shows that yoga and body-based therapies are more effective treatment for post-traumatic stress than medication. Experts agree that gently embodying our experiences is the first step to recovering from trauma.

Trauma experts remind us that trauma is not the story of what happened back then but the physiology of trauma that lives inside. Van der Kolk says "we must treat trauma in the body because that's where the problem is".

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work.  The Turrbal and Yuggara people of Maiwar, The Quandamooka people of Minjerribah, the Bunjalung people to the south, Waka Waka and Gubi Gubi to the north, Burrangum to the west, and particularly to the Gammilray people who have shared deep knowledgeand lore.  We acknowledge sovereignty has not yet been ceded and we stand with you in reconciliation.
